Dishing it!

So I came across this new blog while reading my Twitter Tweets and I really like this girl so far! I entered her Scentsy Give-away and one of the requirements was to do a "Dishing It" entry and link back to her. The topic is Fathers...and since I have one, and am married to one, I thought, "heck...why not?"
So...my ode to Fathers.

~Name your favorite TV or Movie dad.
That would be General Michael Holden on "Army Wives". I think he is such a great example of father AND husband. (and he's pretty easy on the eyes, too...but that's beside the point.) He's firm but fair and doesn't give in just to make his daughter like him more.

~What's the best thing about your dad?
My dad is so wise. He is truly one of the smartest men I've ever met, but not in that nerdy smart way (that would be my brother! HA!) He's scripturally sound, keeps up with current events, but I do have to say, at his older age, he does tend to get set in his ways on some things. Still, I know that when I need advice on things, he is the one to go to.

~If your own dad isn't around, do you have a family member or mentor who can stand in for him?
My dad does not live near me, so I do turn to my new husband for advice on things now, too. His line of thinking is so similar to my dad's in many ways.

~What's something you enjoyed doing with your dad when you were a child OR what do your kids like to do with their dad?

Some of my favorite daddy memories are of making ice cream in the old crank ice cream maker on the carport in the evenings after supper. Our neighborhood was one of those where the parents gathered in their lawn chairs in our driveway to drink coffee and talk of the day's events, and the kids all played frisbee or "stickball" or tetherball in our front or back yards. In the summer we'd crank out ice cream once or twice a week, all getting turns at the cranking.....and share it all around.
Those were the days.

~If your husband is a father, what does he do that makes him a great dad?
My husband is a father to a now almost 20 yr old son who has given us a good share of trouble over the 5 years we've been together, but through it all, my hubby has stood by him and done all he could for his son.

*Christmas 08...hubby (then boyfriend) still had his hunting season beard look*

~Tell us a funny story about your dad or your husband.

I don't know that I have any really funny stories about my dad, but I do have lots of endearing ones....like the way he would let my sister and I "do his hair" (which has always been in a crew cut) with sponge rollers at night as he would lie in the floor and we'd crawl all over him, or the way he surprised me with my senior ring by picking it out and having it engraved for me, or the way he whispered in my ear as I walked down the aisle 20 years ago that "it's not too late if you're not sure. Noone would be mad if you wanted to call this whole thing off right now."

~Do you have any great Father's Day crafts, recipes, or activities you can share or link to?
Nothing terribly great. My hubby loves the Peanut Butter Cornflake Bars...
**Melt 1 cup sugar, 1 cup light corn syrup in a pot, then add 1 cup peanut butter and stir til all melty and creamy. Take off heat and pour in 4 cups cornflakes and stir til all covered. Spread into a greased pan and then cut when cooled.

Nothing terribly exciting...but then we all know I'm no cook and even I can do this one..most of the time. (we won't talk about the time I let the pb mixture burn, or when I added too many cornflakes and it was pretty dry!)

So....there's my tribute to Dads.
I could add more....like how hearing The Statler Brothers always evokes memories of my childhood b/c my daddy put them on the stereo ever Sunday morning as we prepared for church, or how I can't sing the song, "Have a Little Talk with Jesus", or "In the Sweet By and By" and even "Heaven Came Down and Glory Filled My Soul" without hearing my daddy's deep bass voice in my ear.

*1977 maybe*

or how he nearly packed us all up to move from the city of Hot Springs, AR to the teeny tiny farming town of Sterling, NE (where he is from--population 502--most of which are related to me) when I was 14 and nearly "ruined my life"! lol

*my dad with his dad, on the farm, circa 1945*

He's a pretty good dad...and now, even with his bad health and crotchedy ways, I wouldn't trade him for any other!

My dad used to make ice cream too. :) Thanks for the visit today! So sorry you missed the party, but maybe you can link up the next time. :)
